KB10: Your PowerPoint zone shows security warning dialog

Symptom

The first time you try to play a PowerPoint file on your Display Player, a warning dialog appears asking if you want to open or save the file.

Cause

By default, Microsoft PowerPoint for Office XP and PowerPoint 2003 Viewer have a built in security warning.

Solution

The warning dialog can be disabled by adding an entry to the Windows registry.

Note: This method requires you to modify the registry. Incorrectly modifying the registry may cause serious problems.

To add an entry to your Windows registry:

  1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Notepad opens.
  2. Copy the following text:
    Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\AttachmentExecute\{0002DF01-0000-0000-C000-000000000046}]
    "PowerPoint.Show.8"=hex(0)
  3. Paste the copied text into Notepad.
  4. Save your notepad file as Filename.reg
  5. Double-click on the REG file you just saved. This modifies your Windows registry.

Workaround

You can install the free Microsoft PowerPoint 97 Viewer and associate PowerPoint slide show files (PPS) with PPVIEW97.

To associate your PPS files with PowerPoint 97 Viewer:

  1. Uninstall Microsoft PowerPoint 2003.
  2. Install PowerPoint 97 Viewer.
  3. Browse to find your PPS file.
  4. Right-click on the file and select Open With > Choose Program. The Open With dialog box appears.
  5. From Programs, select Microsoft Office PowerPoint Viewer.
  6. Select the Always use the selected program to open this kind of file check box.

To check if your slide show files are associated with your PowerPoint Viewer, double-click on a PPS file. If the file opens in your PowerPoint Viewer then your PPS files have been associated with your Viewer application.
