KB158: Your East Asian language characters appear as boxes in your content

Symptom

When you add East Asian language characters to your content, you see boxes where certain characters should be displayed.

Cause

The East Asian language files have not been installed on your computer and you are running an English version of Windows.

Solution

To install the language files on a Windows XP machine:

  1. Open the Control Panel dialog box on the computer.
  2. Double-click Regional and Language options. The Regional and Language Options dialog box appears.
  3. Click the Languages tab.
  4. Select the Install files for East Asian languages check box. The Install Supplemental Language Support warning dialog appears.
  5. Click OK.
  6. Click OK.
