KB88: Your PowerPoint file opens in a new window instead of playing in your zone

Symptom

Whenever you try to play a PowerPoint file on your Display Player, your PPS file opens in a new window instead of playing in your PowerPoint zone.

Cause

By default, Microsoft PowerPoint opens all PPS files in a new window.

Solution

This behavior can be changed by adding an entry to the Windows registry.

These changes affect the following releases of Microsoft Office PowerPoint:

  • Microsoft Office 97, (version 8)
  • Microsoft Office 2000, (version 9)
  • Microsoft Office XP, (version 10)
  • Microsoft Office 2003, (version 11)
  • Microsoft Office 2007, (version 12)
  • Microsoft Office 2010, (version 14)

Note: This method requires you to modify the registry. Incorrectly modifying the registry can cause serious issues with your computer.

To add an entry to your Windows registry:

  1. Click Start > Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Notepad opens.
  2. Copy the following text:
