KB184: Common Omnivex data applications

Summary

Omnivex data applications are programs that contribute to and retrieve data from the Omnivex DataPipe Server. These applications act as clients to the DataPipe Server. DataPipe Server supports three different types of clients:

  • clients that send data
  • clients that receive data
  • clients that both send and receive data

Clients that send data to the DataPipe Server

These types of clients typically:

  1. Get data from an external data source such as an application or a third-party information service.
  2. Link the source data to DataPipe Server.

For example, XMLLink 3 pulls data from XML files, then links the data to your DataPipe Server. The data can then be shared by any connected client with read capabilities.

  Software Description
CalendarLink 3* Omnivex CalendarLink is a data querying application for use with Omnivex DataPipe Server. CalendarLink retrieves scheduling data from multiple calendars in Microsoft Exchange Server or other MAPI compatible e-mail clients. As information changes, CalendarLink updates your display network to either display new information or react to these changes. Omnivex CalendarLink easily leverages this information to help you communicate to your visitors or your co-workers.
NewsStand 4 Omnivex NewsStand retrieves live news and weather feeds from recognized news providers hosted by Omnivex, such as UPI® and AccuWeather®, and sends it to Omnivex DataPipe Server. Top stories, business, sports, entertainment, science and other news, as well as current and long-range weather forecasts for any number of locations, can be provided on a subscription basis. Omnivex NewsStand is typically used in reception areas, on employee information displays and in retail locations to attract viewers and capture their interest.
ThomsonLink 3 Omnivex ThomsonLink acquires news and stock data from your Thomson One terminal. You can create and maintain custom queries on multiple trading instruments and ThomsonLink delivers this data to Omnivex DataPipe Server for distribution on your display network.
XMLLink 3* Omnivex XMLLink parses XML from a variety of sources and sends this data to Omnivex DataPipe for distribution on your display network. XMLLink accesses XML data on web services and RSS feeds as well as XML documents on the Internet, your corporate intranet or a local computer. You can filter specific XML tags and keywords in the data so you are presented with only the information you want.

Clients that receive data from DataPipe Server

These clients are typically used to present content on an output device such as a plasma screen or an LED display. For example, Display Director reads the data from a range of data sources then displays the data in design zones.

  Software Description
Display 3 Omnivex Display 3 interacts with real-time external data via Omnivex DataPipe Server. Using Display 3, you can connect to live data from DataPipe and integrate this information to data, flash and ticker zones for display. You can also add interactive functionality by using button and command zones to write data to DataPipe.
TickerDisplay 4 Omnivex TickerDisplay 4 provides you with the tools to create a ticker feed with real-time or delayed data in your Omnivex DataPipe Server and then display that data on an LED display board. You can select the stocks you want or let TickerDisplay automatically pick them for you, depending on your data source. Using TickerDisplay you can add custom messages, graphics, time or date stamps and additional data and specify how often they should appear on your LED display board.

Clients that send and receive data from DataPipe Server

These clients are typically user or viewer-facing applications that require an input and a response. For example, a DataPipe Client can be used to type data directly into your DataPipe Server but also displays all the current data to ensure that you don't accidentally overwrite something important.

  Software Description
DataPipe 3 Client* Omnivex DataPipe Client connects with Omnivex DataPipe Server and provides you with the tools to read,  edit and filter any data in your DataPipe Server. Keep track of data as it changes and use this data in real-time graphs and intraday data charts so you understand how your data changes over time. In addition, DataPipe Client links data to and from Microsoft Excel spreadsheets as well as retrieving real-time financial data from data vendors such as Reuters, Bloomberg and Thomson. In fact, any Microsoft Windows DDE-compliant application, such as call center supervisor terminals, can be linked into the DataPipe Client. Once connected to DataPipe, any updates to any values in DataPipe are automatically updated throughout your display network.
EventLink 3 Omnivex EventLink reads event schedule data and delivers messages through Omnivex DataPipe Server to your display network. Set event schedules and status messages that appear throughout the day in relation to the start time of scheduled events with EventLink.
IOLink 3* Omnivex IOLink links Omnivex DataPipe to  external devices. IOLink responds to inputs  or triggers outputs to various hardware devices. Contact closures, RS-232 data streams, RFID readers or scheduled time-based inputs can be used to update DataPipe cells. IOLink can monitor an input for a pre-determined action, monitor DataPipe for specific characters to appear and respond by updating a value in DataPipe and sending this updated data to your display network.
Moxie Data Server The Moxie Data Server can connect to your DataPipe Server, both sending and receiving data. You can use this data as content or to control whatever content is running in your layouts.  Moxie helps  you make much greater use of your data to affect all aspects of your display network.
SQLLink 4* Omnivex SQLLink acquires data directly from ODBC databases (Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and Access) and makes it available to Omnivex DataPipe. You can use this data as content, as a trigger to select other content or to trigger events on your display network. You can create dynamic queries that are triggered by data updates anywhere on your display network. Typically, SQLLink is used for displaying information such as production or sales figures, call center statistics or flight information.
TimerLink 3 Create multiple timers to count up or down. Using Omnivex TimerLink, timers can be set and triggered by Omnivex applications through Omnivex DataPipe.
WebPad 2 Omnivex WebPad is a secure Internet Browser extension of Omnivex DataPipe. Users log on to Omnivex WebPad via Microsoft Internet Explorer to create, manage and post messages to DataPipe Server for use in a digital signage network. You can configure WebPad to require message approval prior to updates being sent to your DataPipe Server for distribution on your network. Editors are notified when new messages are entered and they choose whether to edit, accept or reject the submitted text. Additional functionality includes setting messages to expire at a specified time and logging all activity.
